emagic v8.3
Elsewhere in this issue you can find a combined FISM 2003 report from the HMC members that attended. As is mentioned in the report I have placed my full report on the website (http://www.magician.org.uk) and you can also download it as a PDF file, just do a search for FISM.
This report has received favourable comments and even a mention on MagicWeek (http://www.magicweek.co.uk).
Other reports from FISM have found their way onto the Internet, Sue-Anne Webster along with her partner Tim Ellis ran the MagicSports events at FISM, and Tim was a Jury member. Sue-Anne’s report (http://www4.tpgi.com.au/users/katzkin/PUBFISM2003.htm) contains all the acts from the Close-Up competition and the Stage competition along with photos of the stage acts. You might also want to look at Tim and Sue-Anne’s MagicSports Page (http://www4.tpgi.com.au/users/katzkin/PUBMagicSports.htm) which contains details about this excellent improvisational tool.
The Dutch Dealer Pegani (http://www.pegani.dk/pegasus/arkiv/fism/fism2003/fism2003_report.html) has a day-by-day review with some excellent photos. The German e-magazine Topit (http://www.topitmagic.net/Desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-83/) has also taken some brilliant photos which you can buy on CD, they also have some links to other FISM reports including mine!
I think that gives you enough to read and view on FISM. Moving on, if you are interested in the Allied Arts such as Juggling, there is a brilliant site called Ethereal Cascade (http://www.jcpsystems.com/juggling/) that contains some video clips of the 3-5 ball cascade, and the tricks Mills Mess and Rubenstein’s Revenge. Also on the site are clips of Contact Juggling, Pen Spinning and Diablo. Two good FLASH based Juggling sites I have discovered are Mills Mess (http://www.millsmess.co.uk) and J-Sim (http://www.smallsquare.co.uk/). The Mills Mess site contains over twenty FLASH movies of juggling tricks, simulated by an almost human juggler, you can pause the juggling, take the tricks frame by frame, and even toggle the juggler. On the J-Sim site you can take a tutorial on juggling, then actually control a virtual Juggler with your keyboard as he juggles, you can set speed, number of balls, height of throw etc. For both of these sites you will need to have the Macromedia FLASH plugin installed on your machine (http://www.macromedia.com) to get the best results. Still with the Allied Arts, Astrojax is possibly the newest craze to hit these shores. Astrojax (http://www.astrojax.com) is almost a cross between Juggling and the Yo-Yo. You have three weighted foam balls attached by a piece of string, with the middle ball moving freely. This opens up all sorts of possible tricks, and is based on the principles of rotational dynamics! Go to the site to view movies of the kinds of tricks you can do, and discuss them in the message forum. You can also find out where to buy yourself one from the UK site (http://www.astrojax.co.uk).
For the card magic people out there Nick Pudar has just released a new version of his software program called StackView (http://www.stackview.com). Once installed this program allows you to explore the effect of various actions on a stacked deck. It has several stacks built in, including the Aronson, Tamariz and Joyal memorized decks, and the Si Stebbins and Eight Kings setup. You can then perform actions on the deck such as Faro Shuffles, Forces, and various cuts and runs of cards. This may help you if you are devising new effects or just want to explore the possibilities.
For something to listen to you can find Ricky Jay on his new show Jay’s Journal over on KCRW Radio (http://kcrw.org/show/jj). He talks on topics such as Three Card Monte, Living Pictures, Blind Faith and even Chickens and Bees! Each show runs for about four minutes and you need the Real Player (http://www.real.com) to stream it from the website.
Lastly, having received your syllabus, you know that next year we have the exciting prospect of Street Magician, Gazzo, coming to lecture for us. He has just opened a new site (http://www.magicpitch.com/) along with Gary Animal to sell his magical items. You can buy Cups, Pouches, Books and Videos, and also discuss street magic with Gazzo in the forum. If you want some Summer reading you could look at the book by David Britland and Gazzo Phantoms of the Card Table (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1843440032/) that tells the story of Walter Irving Scott, his methods of cheating with Cards and how Gazzo tracked him down.
