AGM - Sailmakers 05/06/03
Minutes of 2002 Annual General Meeting were read and approved.
Eddie Dawes said that 2002/2003 had been a highly successful year, shown by the enthusiasm in numbers of members attending meetings and competition entries. There were seven external lecturers, with Steve Beam and Jay Sankey from overseas. Our webmaster, Richard had secured Charles Gaucci from Australia as a bonus. Tony Griffiths, Mike O'Brien, Peter Scarlett and Cliff Lount's dealer Demonstration completed the external program. Jon Marshall’s talk on Handcuffs and Roni’s on Cold Reading were by our own members, as were evenings by Peter Smales, Jonathan Gaines and James Ashford, not forgetting the teach-ins by members.
The competitions had all been excellent, including the Close-up night at Ferriby. The Simpson Shield nights had been well supported, thanks to Michael Harrop. The Bob Moore night at Christmas was a fine evening, with fun and humour. The Annual Supper was a great success, with comedy magician John Archer. The Annual Dinner had Tim Cockerill paying tribute to Jon Gresham with his fire-eating act, much admired by Pat Gresham. This was followed by Rousseau and the Great Nardini, all compered by our own Daniel Nelson (aka Derren Litten).
Eddie Dawes thanked all members who had contributed to the society, singling out non-committee members Sylvia Harrop for her work on keeping the attendance records, and professional Roni, who gave his time and experience. All committee members were thanked for their work, but he wanted to record our thanks to two non-members, Jan Stott for her secretarial services, and Elsie Setterington for her support of the Young Magicians. Since in her absence he could not embarrass her, Eddie thanked Amy for her work on the Dinner and her support on all other activities. Eddie reminded us that Rex Stott and David Hand had particularly heavy loads to carry.
Hon. Secretary's Report. Rex Stott was pleased that the membership now stood at seventy-two, even though Tom Wilkinson, Mark Humphrey and Mark Horner had moved from the area. New members included Mark Shortland and Daniel Nelson, with John Archer now applying, which showed how the reputation of HMC was growing. A number of enquires had arisen from both the website and recent publicity in the local papers, thanks to Malcolm Bromwich. Rex thanked everyone who answered his requests for help, mentioning Domanic Li for his posters, Michael Harrop for his record keeping and Eddie Dawes for his wise counsel on problems. Finally he thanked Jan for her support, with almost nine-hundred letters being sent out over the year.
Hon. Treasurer’s Report. David Hand had circulated copies of the financial statement. David urged all to send subscriptions in on time. Our insurance premium had increased considerably, but the lecturers’ expenses were down, even though we had an excellent series of lectures. Oracle expenses do not reflect the full cost of the work. Dinner and Supper costs reflect the date of the balance sheet. David thanked Eddie Dawes and Rex Stott for their frequent support during the year.
Hon. Librarian's Report. Brian Wilson thanked Richard Morrell and Michael Harrop for their work in setting up the computer system that kept the information in control. Brian Wilson said that the year had seen one-hundred and twenty-two items issued, and asked all members to return them by the due date. Any requests or comments are welcome.
Hon. Editor of Oracle Report. Richard Morrell, in the absence of Jon Marshall, said that the next issue was to be produced after this AGM. The last two issues have been professionally produced by Alphagraphics. Domanic Li has assisted. This also reduced the burden on the volunteer team. The website now attracts visitors to external lecturers, as well as new members and publicity for HMC. The Members’ Area is open to all. The Oracle team thanked the regular contributors, including Eddie Dawes for his Presidentials, Arthur Setterington for his many articles and ideas, Michael Harrop for his Missed a Meeting reports,Kerry Scorah for taking over In The Spotlight, and Rex Stott for his many reports. Richard finished by saying that member's contributions would be very welcome.
Arthur Setterington took over the chair for the nomination and election of the President. Alan Johnston proposed Eddie Dawes, seconded by Roger Hindson, this was carried unanimously. Arthur Setterington in declaring Eddie Dawes the President, said that at the recent The Magic Circle Collectors’ Weekend, Jon Marshall gave a talk on Bert Dexter's Scrapbook. This talk reminded Arthur of the days when HMC was a struggling society, but they had the opportunity to meet the music hall artists of the day. Today HMC is a prestigious society, known throughout the country and the world due to the work of Eddie Dawes.
An amendment to the rules read “the date on which new members become entitled to pay half the current rate of the annual subscription be changed from 1st January in any year to 1st March” was proposed by David Hand, seconded by Rex Stott and carried unanimously.
Suggestions were gathered for the new syllabus. Roger Hindson proposed that HMC offer the landlord a show, probably close-up to thank him for his generous support. Rex Stott said he had followed up Roger's previous suggestion, and the landlord had not taken up the offer. However he would remind the landlord of this offer. Eddie Dawes said HMC also invited the landlord to the Supper, but in previous years he had been on holiday.
Alan Johnston suggested that a return visit from the Davenports would be welcomed. Brian Wilson suggested an evening to celebrate our 70 years, based on the magic of the 1930's. Malcolm Bromwich suggested Peter Greenwood and John Hotowka be considered. Roger Hindson added the name of Roger Curzon as a lecturer. Gordon Stow asked that a Children's Entertainer be considered. Rex Stott announced that he had already booked Danny Archer for the Autumn, and Gazzo for 2004.
There being no other business, the meeting closed at 9.32.
