February 20 - Simpson Shield: A Trick with Time
(on 25/02/03 by Richard Morrell - Reports Meetings)
Richard Morrell opened the competition with Roy Walton’s Travellers in Time, he separated the red and black cards, then mixed face-up and face-down cards and lost two indifferent cards. By travelling back in time Richard restored the deck to its original condition. Malcolm Bromwich, with Roxanne Broadbent’s assistance assembled a clock, then used the clock hands and pendulum to penetrate Roxanne’s head. Brian Wilson produced a Chinese clock, complete with authentic Chinese numbers to determine a chosen time. Brian Waltham showed a Supreme trick, complete with Applause cues. Arthur Setterington showed us his skill with the Egg Bag and his grandfather’s Gold Watch.

Rob Walls used a stopwatch to give a random time, which converted to a number, identified a card at that number which had been previously predicted.
Eddie Dawes used a pocket watch in a bag for Sylvia Harrop to set to a random number, but Eddie managed to determine the time. Chris Pawson asked Roxanne to secretly remove a small number of cards from the pack and then dealt twelve cards as a clock. Chris then identified the number of cards chosen, and turning over the clock face showed he also knew the card at that number. Gordon Stow used number cards shuffled by Arthur and chosen in pairs, secretly selecting one pair. Gordon then laid out the cards in four rows, and on being told the rows containing the selected pair was able to announce the correct identity. Roland Tuplin used a Supreme trick to reappear a silk inside a balloon blown up on the night. Rex Stott showed us Michael Close’s Dr Strangetrick a version of Roy Walton’s Card Warp and Domanic Li showed us Paul Harris’s Time Machine.

The result was a win for Richard Morrell, with Arthur Setterington in second place. Eddie Dawes and Gordon Stow were close behind in joint third place.

During the Show and Tell session after the interval we learnt how many members had used age-old effects, with Rob Walls having a long and short deck, and Chris Pawson replaying a Jon Tremaine effect, Time Gentleman Please. Chris also explained the use of the computer and laminating to produce the Clock card. Arthur Setterington explained the finer points of using the Egg Bag and Eddie Dawes talked on his gimmicked watch, based on a Micky Hades effect. Richard Morrell explained Roy Walton’s Travellers in Time, and Gordon Stow said his trick was his development of a Robert Harbin idea. Rex Stott was a fan of Michael Close, and Domanic Li had used a Paul Harris effect.

Eddie Dawes thanked all members who had contributed to another successful heat of the competition, and closed the meeting.
