February 13 - Charles Gauci Lecture
(on 16/02/03 by Richard Morrell - Reports Meetings)
Eddie Dawes introduced Charles Gaucci, who was the first lecturer from Australia in the 70 years of Hull Magicians. Charles started as a professional at 16, and worked for 25 years before entering the business world. He returned to magic, and has appeared around the world, notably America and the Magic Castle.

Charles performed a number of his most effective tricks in the first half, and then explained them in detail in the second half. He guaranteed that each item only took 5 minutes to learn, since he did not resort to finger flinging. He is an entertainer, and uses magic as the medium.

Eye to Eye is a much admired and copied effect, and he invited Roxanne Broadbent to help. This involved giving Roxanne a ten pound note and a medallion, which she was asked to hide, one in each fist. Charles then attempted to divine which hand the note was in, by closely looking into her eyes. He failed on the second attempt, and paid the bemused Roxanne the ten pound bet. During the explanation, Charles said his short-term memory had failed him.

Then followed Body Language, involving four gold balls and a black ball, held inside a cloth bag. This was Charles's development of a Max Maven idea. Five members took a ball from the bag unseen, and Charles managed to divine who had received the black ball. During the explanation, Charles again made an error, but showed us why. Charles then praised the Dawes hospitality - could this explain his problem?

The Houdini Card Mystery showed a chosen marked card being returned to the centre of the pack and placed inside a card box. He then threaded a ribbon through a hole in the pack, which was held by an assistant. Finally a bolt was threaded through another hole to secure the cards. In spite of this under cover of a cloth the chosen card escaped.

Sucker Billiard Balls involved two billiard balls, which after some kidology actually changed colour.

Numerology used a chart to find a card within a pack.

Nostradamus used sixteen numbered tiles placed onto a square at members' directions, to give not one but two predictions of the resulting total.

He finished with Blackjack and Believe It Or Not.

Charles recommended having good patter, but being prepared to modify to suit the audience. Adopt a relaxed style, and perform slowly to bring the audience along. He sometimes repeated tricks twice, as long as there was a different modus operandi. When performing table-hopping, he waited to be invited to a table, which set the ball rolling.

His stall was very busy after the meeting, with even Roni putting his hand in his pocket.

Eddie Dawes congratulated him on his excellent presentation, which showed the impact and ingenuity of his items.
