January 23 - Simpson Shield: Trick with Paper
Initiation Show - Stuart Richardson. Stuart gagged his way through a confident performance in difficult circumstances. Members were given the chance to win £10 but even Roni failed to select the correct envelope. This was followed by a water suspension over Roni (Surprisingly Rex did not volunteer for this!) He finished with a tilting box production and the Vanishing Bandana.
Initiation Show - Ron Thompson. Ron, who last did an audition 43 years ago, started by attempting to bribe the audience with chocolates, asking for the wrappers to be returned which then became hot in the persons hand. He then produced the chosen Queen of Hearts at a selected number, then all the aces, a hand of hearts and finally a royal flush. He concluded with a Ken Brooke item of a book, the contents of which changed from blanks, through money; Alphabets, Music and Crosswords. The result of the members' ballot was that both applicants were accepted unanimously.
Rob Walls opened the competition with a topical Harry Potter Theme, making a wizards hat that produced coins. Rex Stott had a Professor Rhinehard Muller item, using postage stamps, deducing which stamp had been selected after a series of further turnovers to hide the original stamp. Brian Waltham brought along an old Supreme item ContraTear which produced a tall story. Brian Wilson had a newspaper that showed a red-hot night out, and Alan Johnston reminisced about reading newspapers on the Glasgow underground by tearing and restoring the paper.
Malcolm Bromwich followed with a torn and restored tissue, attempting to explain how it was done. Eddie Dawes showed an elegant Robert Neale topological item, based on Inside Out involving a tube with shoelaces threaded through. A white paper penetrated both the tube and shoelaces. Richard Morrell did not have cards, but a paper trick involving Sylvia Harrop numbering nine blanks that had been previously numbered on the back in an identical manner. Domanic Li drew arrows on three cards, all pointing the same way. However when the cards were turned, it always seemed that the red arrow changed direction. Finally Jon Marshall showed a Jim Steinmeyer item from the latest MAGIC magazine. This had elaborate printed instructions, with many redundant items. Jon proceeded to cut these out, but the instructions stayed complete. The last instruction was to cut the rope in half, which Jon did successfully, but failed to restore.
The result was a clear win for Jon Marshall, with Richard Morrell and Domanic Li in joint second place. There followed a show and tell session, with Eddies contribution being much admired, and Jon Marshall explaining Clippo, with a number of practical suggestions.
