November 28 - Tony Griffiths Lecture
Eddie Dawes reminded members that Tony Griffiths had visited the society nine years ago. He is a worldwide lecturer and performer notably at the Magic Castle. He also organises lecture tours by overseas magician, and the last three tours organised were by Harvey Berg, Aldo Colombini and Steve Beam and all been seen by HMC members.
Tony Griffiths opened his talk with Konfusing Kolors as an icebreaker, followed by The Whole picture, a development of a Daryl's trick. Tony followed with a succession of tricks with rope and ring, Diary and cards. All these were included the lecture notes, including DIY instructions. The tricks were fully explained by Tony, who also gave the antecedents for his versions. He talked about adapting to the audience, illustrating this with school, close-up and stage variants.
The Second half started with tips on the Commercial practicalities of getting bookings and working for corporate clients. Among many tips was to avoid Norwegian style mousetraps for a surprise revealing of a card - they are violent! Audience Participation in Person Move was followed by a neat way of thanking volunteers in N.C.F. Handy, an impromptu puppet, closed the lecture
Eddie Dawes thanked Tony Griffiths for a splendid evening with variety, and above all do-able magic. All members had benefited from his excellent presentation.
