November 14 - Simpson Shield: Magic of the Mind
Malcolm Bromwich opened the competition with two slates that predicted a chosen Ace by producing the correct card. Richard Morrell performed Symbalance, an ESP effect where he found chosen symbols. Brian Wilson reminded us that Rex was cruising the high seas with his car cruise that finished on a predicted location. Rob Walls failed to find a chosen card several times in a row, but then showed the result was a telephone number where the answer machine came up with the correct card.
Domanic Li performed The Mockingbird, he shuffled and divided a deck into four piles, then invited a card to be chosen from any pile. Domanic found the mate without difficulty. Gordon Stowe attempted a similar feat. Arthur Setterington followed with a book-test, and when the top line of a chosen page was read out he could identify the page number. Alan Johnston asked for three numbers from the audience, that added up to Eddie Dawes phone number. Finally, Jonathan Gaines with Margaret Henriksen’s help was able to sense the hand that held one of two jewels repeatedly.
The clear Winner was Jonathan Gaines, with a tie for second place between Richard Morrell, Rob Walls and Domanic Li.
Show and Tell. After the interval, all competitors talked about their tricks. Max Maven was obviously inspiration for Richard Morrell, Domanic Li and Gordon Stowe. Gordon and Domanic had started from the same trick, but Gordon had added his own variation. Arthur Setterington explained his new trick would be published in January, but kindly gave us advance knowledge of the method. Alan Johnston was asked to explain his subterfuge, and Jonathan Gaines explained his was a new dealer item Zurcon from Roger Curzon.
This concluded the yet another entertaining heat of the Simpson Shield.
